I had the pleasure to sit down and talk with National Association of School Nurses (NASN.org) President, Donna Mazyck recently. You’ll be able to hear that interview in a future episode of the Nursing Show.
We talked about the powerful influence that school nurses have in influencing healthy behaviors in the children they treat.
School Nurses Provide Valuable Interventions
Nurses in schools educate as much or more than they treat the students they encounter. Education about healthy nutrition, poisonings, drug abuse, bicycle, home and motor vehicle safety are all topics that school nurses encounter.
A recent article from the U.K. backs up the importance of school nurses. A report from the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) points out the importance of having nurses in every school and advises that steps be taken to increase the funding to provide for RNs in every school.
