Tip of The Week- Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome
ARDS is a respiratory disorder wherein there is the rapid onset of progressive malfunction of the lungs. It is a life-threatening condition because there is not enough oxygen entering into the blood.
It can arise from a number of causes including trauma, sepsis, diffuse pneumonia and shock. Symptoms include dyspnea, profound hypoxemia, low blood pressure and organ failure. The acute onset of symptoms is a specific criteria in the diagnosis of ARDS.
Treatment goals are aimed at resolving the underlying cause of ARDS and nursing care is directed at providing rest, comfort, nutrition and interventions to avoid complications.
