First up in the news for nurses is a story from a week or so ago but you may not have heard about it. Two nurses in an Oklahoma City hospital emergency room were stabbed when a patient suddenly pulled out a knife and started attacking them. Another ER staff member was injured in the assault.
Patient Charged in Deadly Assault
The man then barricaded himself in the waiting room until a police tactical team showed up and rooted him out taking him into custody. He has been charged with assault with a deadly weapon and other charges in the attack. Two of the three injured nurses were treated and released while a third remained in the hospital for a few days in serious but stable condition.
This is just another of the dangers we all face in the health care field and is another reason we must report all potential assaults or dangerous situations. While not all patients are carrying knives with an inclination to go on a stabbing spree, there are those who get physical with us while they are being treated.
Nurses Should Feel Safe At Work
We as nurses are in positions that put us at risk for assault from our patients all the time and we should have the right to feel safe and secure while doing our jobs. Some of these things are not going to be stopped. I understand that.
What I want is two things. I want all of you to make sure you are aware of your surroundings and take steps to protect yourselves when necessary. Secondly, I want the laws to make crimes against nurses treating a patient to be treated as seriously as assaults on police officers. When these assaults happen, they must be dealt with as a serious breach of trust between a patient and a caregiver.
