Welcome to the Show

Good day and welcome to this week’s episode of the Nursing Show podcast for nurses, by nurses. I’m your host Jamie Davis and I’d like to take this opportunity to thank you for checking out the show this week. First up, in this week’s nursing news items, we’ll look at an Illinois law that will allow nursing home residents to install electronic surveillance in their rooms to watch staff interactions. Is this violating nurses’ rights?

Then in this week’s tip of the week, we have Penney Cowan, Founder and CEO of the American Chronic Pain Association and Dr. Anita Gupta, an anesthesiologist who is active in research and advocacy for matters relating to pain to talk about challenges managing patients with chronic pain using opioids. What can nurses do to educate patients and their families about options using these powerful medications? We’ll find out about that and more later in this episode after the news.

If you want to get back in touch with me, please drop me an email. You can send those e-mails in to I love to hear from you and I make sure I respond back to every email that comes in. Send me links to news items you’d like me to cover, interview suggestions with you or somebody you know.

Tip of the Week – Chronic Pain Management With Opioids

chronic-pain-management-america-starts-talking-logoMany people live with chronic pain each day. While prescription opioid pain medications are an important part of treatment, life-threatening side-effects can sometimes occur, even for those who take their opioids as directed. Opioid emergencies, such as accidental overdose, are a growing public health epidemic in the United States, but conversations between healthcare providers, patients and their loved ones about the safe use of prescription opioid pain medications can be difficult to start.

“America Starts Talking” is a new campaign designed to help prompt these sometimes uncomfortable discussions. Here today to share vital information on opioid safety and the campaign is Dr. Anita Gupta, an anesthesiologist who is active in research and advocacy for matters relating to pain. She joins us today, along with Penney Cowan, Founder and CEO of the American Chronic Pain Association.
