Finally in the news this week is a look at what you can do to help yourself and, along the way, help your patients. There’s a great column over at McKnights.com where two nurse columnists point out something I’ve talked about on the Nursing Show here before.

Self-Care Helps Us Care for Others

nurse exercise self-careMarla Weston and Marie Moore make a good point in their column. They point out that you can ask a nurse about all of the things they did during their demanding work days to help their patients get healthier and heal from injury or illness. But if you ask them what they did for themselves to maintain their health and energy to meet their demanding work schedules and you’ll get a blank stare.

We are great at caring for others but not so good at caring for ourselves. We put others first and that is admirable, but we forget that if we are sidelined by an illness or injury, we lose the ability to care for others anymore for the time of our recovery. Helping care for yourself is caring for your patients.

ANA Healthy Nurse Initiative

The American Nurses Association has a new initiative called the Healthy Nurse Initiative. It can be found at NursingWorld.org/healthynurse. The ANA defines a healthy nurse as one who actively focuses on creating and maintaining a balance and synergy of physical, intellectual, emotional, social, spiritual, personal and professional wellbeing. Do you fit even a part of that description? Many of us don’t. I know I could do better.

The ANA is providing a free health risk appraisal for any nurse and nursing student at ANAHRA.org. It’s available now and it not only gives you your results but allows you to compare your results to the national results to see where you stand with your peers. Share this resource with your peers and colleagues. Let’s do everything we can to make sure that all nurses are as healthy as possible. Assessing your health using this tool is a good start.
