Tip This Week- Physiology of pain part 1
According to studies, pain is the principal symptom causing patients to seek medical attention, affecting 1 in 5 Americans on any given day. When a person is in chronic pain, not only are they physically affected but also emotionally and financially. Studies estimate that 70 million visits to healthcare providers were motivated by pain and that 4.9 million people visited a healthcare provider for treatment of chronic pain, all at an estimated cost exceeding $100 billion. Overall, the quality of life of an individual suffering from pain is deeply affected.

Despite advanced studies on pain and development of new medications and technology have been made over the years, pain still continues to be one of the major healthcare problems in the US.

Listen in on this episode and have a more in-depth understanding of how and why pain occurs, the underlying mechanism in our system as to how pain is interpreted and transmitted to and from the brain, and the physiology and process of pain in general

Tip This Week- A look at common hospital associated infections
In this episode, nurses are once again reminded of the importance of observing the principles of infection control and the relevance of observing these principles to prevent patients from acquiring nosocomial infection.

Examples include sustained reduction in central line-associated bloodstream infections (CLABSIs) by 70%, simply by ensuring adherence to available guidelines. Reductions have been demonstrated for other HAIs as well, but, much more remains to be done. Wherever patient care is provided, adherence to infection prevention guidelines is needed to ensure that all care is safe care. This includes traditional hospital settings as well as outpatient surgery centers, long-term care facilities, rehabilitation centers, and community clinics.

For nurses, the simplest but most effective way of preventing the spread of HAI's is frequent and proper handwashing. Adhering to the routine of washing one's hands every after patient and procedure goes a long way not only for ourselves but also for our patients.

Tip This Week- Stroke Prevention and Awareness Part 2
Following up on last week's starter episode for nurses on stroke prevention and awareness, here comes the continuation of the said topic. More tips on how to stop stroke even before it occurs and how to let the public know on how it happens, where it stars, how to know when it starts and things that they can do to keep their hearts healthy.

Included in this episode are links to free and inexpensive stroke education and awareness resources for both health care professionals and the community. Also discussed are defining your audience for these types of outreach and education projects as a nurse and potential venues for the materials.

In the discussion, they talked about how professionals from the EMS side can learn from the nursing side of the profession. They talked about the nursing profession, where it has been, where it has come to and where it still needs to go in relation to another young medical and healthcare profession looking for ways to improve its standing in health care and improve its education and career outlook for its professionals.

Tip This Week- Discussion on Katrina Lawsuit & Hospital Preparedness, part 2
This week's show continues the discussion on the Katrina Hospital Lawsuit Settlement with the hosts of the Mitigation Journal (http://mitigationjournal.blogspot.com/) Rick Russotti and Matt Comer. Does this settlement raise a risk of an impossible standard for preparedness for our hospitals and community health facilities? Matt and Rick join Nursing Show host Jamie Davis as they shift the conversation into a broader look at preparedness beyond the Katrina incidents and aftermath.

What is your preparedness level and how well do you know how your facility's response plan? This is one of the lessons to be learned by the individual nurse out there. A lot of difficult decisions about patient care have to be made during any extreme disaster event. Holding a normal standard of care against care givers when resources are severely compromised or reduced is impractical at best and ridiculous at worst. Listen to this week's discussion and you can also catch last week's discussion as part 1 of our Discussion on Katrina Hospital Lawsuit Settlement (http://www.nursingshow.com/?p=4629).

Tip This Week- Discussion on Katrina Lawsuit & Hospital Preparedness, part 1
This week's show is a discussion with Rick Russotti of the Mitigation Journal (http://mitigationjournal.blogspot.com/)and MJ co-host Matt Comer in a two-part episode on the general situation of a hospital lawsuit that rooted from the Hurricane Katrina and its implications to different organizations involved. During the time of hurricane Katrina, Memorial Medical Center in New Orleans was out of power, running water and temperature rose to 100 degrees. Reports of inadequate triage processes for evacuation and lack or leadership quickly followed. Eventually, forty-five bodies were found in the devastated health center during recovery efforts. Physician Anna Pou together with two other nurses allegedly "hastened" the patients' deaths by injecting them with lethal doses of morphine. Pou defended herself by saying she merely helped the patients through their pain and holds that stand up until now.
A recent court decision required the institution to pay an amount of $25 million to the individuals who took shelter at that hospital and sustained injuries and died. This decision was based upon the lack of preparedness of the hospital for such disasters and its failure to operate in a highly emergent situation.

Tip This Week- Bronchodilators and Nursing Considerations
Bronchodilators are a type of medications are used to treat patients with asthma. They work by relaxing the smooth muscles that line the airways. This makes the airways open wider and allows air to leave the lungs. These drugs also are used to relieve breathing problems associated with emphysema, chronic bronchitis, and other lung diseases.

In this episode, listen in and have a review on a revisited episode on basic drug information of bronchodilators as well as the nursing considerations and nursing care associated with the use of this type of drug.

This Week- Accidental EpiPen Injections
Epinephrine is the drug of choice for the emergency treatment of severe allergic reactions (Type I) to insect stings or bites, foods, drugs, and other allergens. It can also be used in the treatment of anaphylaxis of unknown cause (idiopathic anaphylaxis) or exercise-induced anaphylaxis. When given intramuscularly or subcutaneously it has a rapid onset and short duration of action.

In this episode, tox expert Lisa Booze of the Maryland Poison Center provides information on what nurses can expect from a patient and what do in cases of accidental EpiPen injection. Follow the links provided for more detailed information.

This Week- Malaria Disease, Treatment, and Prevention (Part 1)
Malaria is an infection caused by the Plasmodium parasite which infects red blood cells. There are different types of Plasmodium parasites. In 1889, it was discovered that mosquitoes transmitted malaria. Signs and symptoms include fever, headache, vomiting that usually appear 10 to 15 after being bitten by a carrier mosquito. If not treated immediately, the condition can be life threatening.

Preventive measures are primarily aimed at controlling vector mosquitoes through the use of insecticidal nets and indoor spraying of insecticides. Follow up on the links provided below for additional information on the disease, treatment modalities and preventive measures.

This Week- Types of Nursing Documentation
Nursing documentation is a form of communication between nurses involved in the care of a patient. Through nursing documentation, nurses can go through what has and has not been done to the patient before their shift. Apart from that, documentation is also serves as a legal document which reflects the care that has been given to a patient.

In this episode of the Nursing Show, listen in and learn about the different types of documentation, which type is appropriate for which situation, and tips on how to do proper documentation.

This Week- School Nurse Interview with past NASN President Donna Mazyck
The National Association of School Nurses de?nes school nursing as: A specialized practice of professional nursing that advances the well-being, academic success, and lifelong achievement ofstudents. To that end, school nurses facilitate positive student responses to normal development; promote health and safety;intervene with actual and potential health problems; provide case management services; and actively collaborate with others to build student and family capacity for adaptation, self-management, self-advocacy, and learning.

This week on the Nursing Show, the podmedic Jamie Davis does an interview segment with former NASN president Donna Mazyck. Here they talk about how she came into the profession, her experiences as a school nurse and a lot of information about another specialized field of the nursing profession, school nursing.
