Medical style tests like the NCLEX can be confusing even after preparing so much for it.

Critical Thinking Built In!

The questions are designed to test the critical thinking skills of a graduate nurse and determine if you are competent enough to care for actual patients in the field. Most of the options seem to be correct but in fact only one is needed.

The best way to approach multiple choice exams is to narrow down your options. Here are some tips on how to eliminate options in multiple choice tests.

1. Try to answer the question on your own

After reading and analyzing the question, try answering it based on your knowledge without looking at the options. If you are sure and confident that you know the correct answer, choose the option that corresponds with your answer or the one nearest to it.

2. Treat each option as a true-false question

Go through the options and determine if it is a true or false statement about the question. Answer according to what is being asked. Be sure to read the question very carefully because sometimes, the right answer that they need is an incorrect or false statement.

3. Eliminate incorrect options

If you don’t know exactly what the right answer is, move to reading the options and eliminate those that you know is incorrect. If more than one option remains, give your best guess.

4. Look for cues that make options incorrect

Question options that contain the following because they most likely will be incorrect

    • Contains absolute words like ‘always’ or ‘never’.
    • Choices that mean the same thing
    • Totally unfamiliar options
    • Options that grammatically don’t fit the stem

5. Choose from opposites

If two choices are opposite each other, chances are one of them is the correct answer.

6. All or none of the above

If provided with an option “none of the above” or “all of the above”, go back to the earlier choices and see if more than two is a true or false statement about the question. If this is the case then all or none of the above is a strong possibility.
