This Week- Antihypertensive Medication Review Part 2

As a follow up to last week's nursing review on antihypertensive medications, here comes the second installment on our nursing review for drugs used to treat hypertension. Since antihypertensives are drugs taken on a regular basis for patients diagnosed with hypertension, nurses should be well versed with these drugs to be able to provide the proper nursing care and patient education regarding the use of these medications including interactions with other medicines and contraindications for the use of this drug class.

For more information on antihypertensive medications and their basic drug information, follow the links below.

This Week- Nurse Review on Antihypertensives

Hypertension is one of the most common chronic illness in the US and also one of the leading causes of heart disease. Before hypertension reaches its complications, patients with hypertension are given medications to be taken everyday to maintain their blood pressure at normal.

There are different antihypertensives given to individual patients. Though these all work to lower the blood pressure, it differs in the mechanism in which they work. The types of antihypertensives include beta blockers, calcium channel blockers, ACE inhibitors, diuretics, adrenergic modifiers, Angiotensin II receptor blockers and other combination medications.

For more information on antihypertensive medications and their basic drug information, follow the links below.

Tip of The Week- Cardiac Medication Classes

Cardiovascular disease is prevalent in the United States. Every year, the number of cases of heart disease and stroke increases. Once a person had a heart attack, they will be prescribed with medications they will most likely take for the rest of their lives. Depending on the physician's order, there are different types and combinations of cardiac medications.

Full effects of these medications are only taken advantage of when taken religiously so health professionals, nurses in particular, should be aware of the kinds and classifications of cardiac medications as well as its indications and adverse effects so they could educate the patient and make them understand the importance of adhering to the medication. Encouraging the patient to report symptoms of adverse reactions and overdosing should also be included in the teaching plan.
